Welcome to this post in which i will be covering the results i’ve had with Chelsea FC during season two. If you want to remember how my first season went, then make sure to take a look at that post as well. An unbeaten season but no Premier League title was very weird to experience. Let’s hope season two went a bit better for us as we are all dying to win the Premier League this time around.

FM20 | THE BLUE ARMY – CRY ME A RIVER

Our pre-season results have been outstanding even though we went up against unknown teams for me. It does show that the team is ready for the season to come and that is always a good thing. I also really liked the fact that a lot of different players have managed to find the net. It is always good to know as a manager that you don’t have to rely on one or two players for your entire goal scoring production. When different players know how to score a goal your team will become less predictable and more dangerous then when the same two players score time and again.

It is safe to say that we’ve had a fantastic Premier League season. This time around we did not manage to have an unbeaten season. But the 32 victories, four draws and two losses did however lead us to the Premier League title. As you can see at the screenshot we had a much better second season then our first has been. We’ve managed to rack up a total of 100 points which are four more then during last season and our goal differnce also went up with eight goals. The team scored 102 goals which are sixteen goals more then last season and we conceded 21 goals which was one more then last season. But even when we were much stronger then last season it took us to the end before we could celebrate the title. Liverpool would not give up and kept us going all the way until the last five games. That is where we eventually made the difference and became Premier League champions.

Another important factor to consider this season was the arrival of Thomas Lemar. The French winger has managed to give 23 assists during the season and was one of the main reasons why the squad has improved on the goalscoring side of things. This will also explain why Tammy Abraham has managed to become the top goal scorer of this season for both our club as the entire Premier League. As you can see at the screenshot below some of our results have been outstanding as we’ve managed to beat Liverpool 5-2, Leicester with 5-0 and Manchester United with 4-0. All in all a very solid season which will be very hard to copy during season three. For Sheffield United, Newcastle and Swansea the season ended with relegation. So next season we will see Aston Villa, West Brom and West Ham back in the Premier League.

Last season our European campaign ended in the semi finals where we met Liverpool. Over two games we lost 1-0 and so we ended up empty handed. This season our board of directors has given us the goal to reach the semi finals again. As this is not an easy thing to do i was not extremely happy when we ended up in Group C with Paris Saint-Germain, Athletic Club and Red Bull Salzburg as our opponents. Each and every one of these teams can be really tough to beat on any day of the week and this showed in our results. Our Champions League adventure started with a draw against PSG and Athletic Club but after that we did manage to beat Red Bull Salzburg away from home. We continued our Champions League run with another victory against Red Bull Salzburg and we also managed to beat PSG thanks to two goals from veteran Olivier Giroud. Last but not least we drew away from home with Athletic Club but by doing so we did secure ourselves the number one spot in the group with twelve points in total. PSG ended as runners up with ten points where Athletic Club will go to the Europa league after getting five points in this group. Red Bull Salzburg’s European adventure was over as they only managed to get four points which was not enough to continue any sort of campaign in Europe.

Our first opponent in the Champions League knock-out stages was SL Benfica. This team gave us more trouble then i expected but with a 1-2 win away from home and a 3-2 win at home we managed to go to the next round. There we had to go up against German champions Bayern München. As always these type of games are very hard and the outcome is a surprise most of the time. For us the difference between the two teams was Thomas Lemar. At home we drew 1-1 against Bayern where Lemar managed to score our goal and away at München we managed to win 0-1 where Callum Hudson-Odoi scored and Lemar gave the assist. In the semi final we had to go up against Valencia who were the easiest Champions League opponents of the season. We managed to beat them twice with 3-1 and so we ended up in the Champions League final. And guess who our opponent was going to be? Yes, indeed it was Liverpool. The club that kicked us out of the tournament last season was the final hurdle before we could celebrate any Champions League success. But this time around it was different as we ended up winning the final 3-2. The match itself was really intense as both teams were pretty equal to one another. This reflected in a 2-2 score when we went into the last few minutes of the final. Yet again it was Thomas Lemar with the assist and Callum Hudson-Odoi with the goal as i’ve seen happen so many times during this season. This 90th minute goal was too much for Liverpool and when the final whistle was blown a big celebration happened on and off the pitch. Winning the Champions League is always special and for me it is the first time in Football Manager 2020 so i really enjoyed it.

Our English Cup adventures weren’t as successful this season as they’ve been last season. Last season we managed to win both the EFL Cup and the FA Cup but this season we did not do that at all. In the EFL Cup we did went to the final after beating Aston Villa, Wycombe, Sheffield United and Liverpool. But in the final itself Manchester United was too strong as we lost 1-2 against them. It was a real shame that we did not manage to win this cup final but i am satisfied with how my team has played in the EFL Cup. As you might recall i mostly use my benchwarming players and youth players during these cup games. The FA Cup was a whole different kind off cookie for us. Last season we won but this season we went out in the quarter finals against Aston Villa. A penalty shootout made the difference for The Villa and so they went through and we stayed behind empty handed.

FA COMMUNITY SHIELD

I almost forgot about this one but here it is. We participated in the FA Community Shield at the start of the season. Liverpool was our opponents as they were the Premier League winners and we won the FA Cup. As i am a very competitive person in the world of Football Manager i really wanted to win the Community Shield. It would be the ideal moment to dish out the first punch to Liverpool before the Premier League season would start. Luckily for me my players were thinking the exact same thing and they pulled off a really good game. Where most games between my Chelsea team and Liverpool are usually close this game was completely not.

When you look at the stats you might think i am crazy but my team was way better. Both teams had nearly the same amount of shots but our chances, shots and goal conversion was more dangerous and better then the ones from Liverpool. And that is what made the difference between the two teams on this occassion. Goals from N’Golo Kanté, Kurt Zouma, Thomas Lemar (who else!?) and Mateo Kovacic ensured us of our first silverware of the season. Our team captain Mateo Kovacic also grabbed the Player of the Match award and so our start of the season has been really really good.

TRANSFERS

Like every season we also have been active on the transfer market during the Januari window. At first i wasn’t really sure that i wanted to spend much money but when offers came in for our players and they actually wanted to leave eventually forced my hand. The first player that left the club was veteran Olivier Giroud who has been struggling with his benchwarming role within the team. When Napoli came in with a two and half million euro’s bid i decided to accept it. And so Giroud’s era at Chelsea and in the Premier League has come to an end. Another surprising transfer was the departure of Willian. The Brazilian player did not want to extend his contract and as i did not want to let him leave on a free at the end of the season i placed him on the transfer list. After quite a few bids came in it was Real Madrid in the end who snatched him up for just under twenty million euro’s. Last but not least our third goalkeeper Jamal Blackman was sold as well. He went to Swansea for three million euro’s and we wish him the best of luck in the Championship next season as Swansea got relegated in the end.

When players leave new ones will eventually come to the club and so we found three nice replacements for the three players that had left us. Louis Munteanu was our first januari signing as he came over from Viitorul Constanta for ten million euro’s. This young striker is very talented player and i expect him to make it into the first team within the next three seasons. Until then he will be either loaned out to aid his development or play his games in our under 23 team and sometimes in the first team (during cupgames for example). Jordan Pickford got picked up as i am still not really happy with Kepa and Buffon will stay on as my back-up goalkeeper. Getting a keeper like Pickford for 22 million euro’s is quite the bargain in my eyes. Currently he is 27 years old, has the English nationality and he was ready for the next step in his career. During the remainder of season two he has swapped around with Kepa and he has convinced me enough to make him my new number one goalkeeper. This means that i will look to sell Kepa at the start of season three but as he is a very expensive goalkeeper i doubt if i can get rid off him eventually. Last but not least we’ve signed Wout Weghorst as a replacement for Olivier Giroud. In real life i am a big Weghorst fan and i hope he will be as good for my Chelsea team as he is in real life for VfL Wolfsburg.

FINAL WORDS …

As you can see we’ve had a fantastic season where we’ve managed to become champions in both England as in. Once again i would like to thank each and every one of you who has taken the time to read my post. For now this savegame will come to an end.  I will come back with another savegame on my blog very soon. Until then i hope everybody can stay safe!.
